Origin of Jeju Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul Festival

The Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul Festival has kept alive the culture of Jeju cattle breeding, bringing it up to date for the current lifestyle.

Even as recently as 30 years ago, every house in the mid-mountainous area of Jeju bred two or three cows, using them as the major labor force in field cultivating. The cows were set to pasture in a collective village farm after the busy farming season. In the spring, the houses that were raising cattle alternatively led their cows to the fields to feed early in the morning.

To graze cows as in the above situation, the pasture should be managed well, and this was not easy. Farmers needed to have pastures with good quality grass in the mid-mountain area. To this end, the villages set fire to the fields sometime between late winter and early spring in order to destroy the old grass and kill any harmful insects in the fields.

This fire setting is called "Deulbul-noki¡± (¡®setting a fire to the field,¡¯ Bangae). The Jeongwol Daeboreum Deulbul Festival has developed the old customs of Jeju to fit to the modern lifestyle.
